The word pattern connotes many associations and meanings. As an artist employing craft-based processes, a pattern is something to be followed, a guide, a way of communicating between makers so that something can be reproduced. For me, a pattern is a form of suggestion, something akin to conceptual art. Sol LeWitt, for example, is well known for his wall drawings which he provided instructions for others to recreate through directives and schematics, i.e. a template or pattern. Every installation or iteration of LeWitt's wall drawings is unique. Similarly, each weaver, quilter, and sewer interprets a pattern differently whether through choice of color, materiality, or handling. A pattern, therefore, becomes a code or a shorthand. The work in this series explores various patterns found in quilting and garment construction to create compositions in encaustic and works on paper.
